Don't Know Where to Start?

Links, FAQs, and how to get your license in PA

You’re just getting started with Driver’s Ed and we’re sure you have questions! We’ve collected some helpful information below to help you navigate the rules and regulations of becoming a newly licensed driver in Pennsylvania. If you have any additional questions, please reach out to us.

Obtaining Your Driver’s License
An initial Learner’s Permit is issued to any individual 16 years of age or older who has never been licensed to operate a vehicle, a new resident who has never been licensed, or a new resident who has been licensed in another state but whose driver’s license has been expired longer than 6 months. If you are a new resident of PA, please visit our New Resident Information page.

Step 1:
Acquire a Pennsylvania Driver’s Manual from the PA DMV website.

Step 2:
Have a physician, physician assistant, certified registered nurse practitioner, or chiropractor conduct a physical examination and complete Form DL-180, “Medical Qualification Certificate.”

Step 3:
Visit a Driver License Center with:

  • The completed DL-180
  • The completed DL-180TD (if under the age of 18). This form must be completed by a parent, guardian, or spouse 18 years of age or older.
  • Proof of identity, which is listed on the reverse side of DL-180. Note: If you are changing your name, you must present original documents supporting name changes such as a marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order.
  • Two acceptable proofs of residency, listed on the reverse side of DL-180, if you are 18 years of age or older. Proof of residency is not required if you are age 16 or 17.
  • Your Social Security card.
  • A check or money order payable to PennDOT for the appropriate fee. (Cash is not accepted.)
  • Step 4:
An eye screening and Knowledge Test will be given. Once passed, a Learner’s Permit will be issued. The Learner’s Permit will be valid for one year. If you are under age 18, a six-month waiting period and 65 hours behind the wheel driving experience is required before taking the skills test.

Step 5:
Schedule a road test with us online and call (215) 699-0836 to book.

We’ll administer the test using the same standards as if you tested at a PennDOT facility (including parallel parking). If you pass your test, your permit is stamped and becomes your temporary license for 120 days. We’ll send your test results to PennDOT. You should receive a camera card in the mail within a few weeks, which you can take to any PennDOT photo center along with your stamped permit to have your photo taken and receive your hard copy photo license.

  • We recommend arriving 15-20 minutes before your scheduled test time to allow for paperwork.
  • Bring an accompanying adult over the age of 21 with a valid driver’s license, ideally your parent or guardian to fill out the DL-180C consent form. If your parent or guardian will not be present, you’ll need to bring the completed DL-180C with you.
  • Vehicle must have valid registration and proof of insurance present.
  • Vehicle must be in good working condition, including working lights and signals, horn, seat belts, etc.
  • You can test in one of our vehicles for an additional fee.

Unfortunately, we cannot conduct a lesson with a photocopy or image of a student’s permit. If you’ve lost your permit, please contact PennDOT to get a replacement and let us know as soon as possible to avoid cancellation and rescheduling fees. You can pre-fill the replacement permit application by downloading this form before you visit PennDOT.

One of the ways we create a great experience for instructors is helping them manage an efficient schedule. At the same time, we get that life gets in the way sometimes, and it’s important to us that we are able to provide as much flexibility as possible for students. We believe that the best balance is achieved by providing total flexibility for you to cancel or rebook lessons 72 hours or more prior to your lesson, and charge a cancellation or change fee within 72 hours. The cancellation or change fees are as follows:

  • Changes or cancellations made at least 72 hours prior to the lesson start: free
  • Changes or cancellations made between 72 hours and 24 hours prior of the lesson start: 35% of the lesson value
  • Within 24 hours, no shows, or changes or cancellations made after the lesson start: full lesson price
